Refs zsoftly/iaas#785. Related documentation: zsoftly/zcp-docs#127.

Problem

DNS record creation printed the whole zone, and deletion printed only a confirmation message. This PR makes the output specific to the selected record. Deletion uses a pre-delete snapshot because the API does not return removed values; an explicit fully qualified name now permits deletion when the initial read is unavailable.

Result

  • dns record-create prints the created value, and default dns record-delete prints the matching pre-delete snapshot in table, JSON, and YAML output.
  • Snapshot rows include a SOURCE column (Pre-delete snapshot) in tables and source: pre_delete_snapshot in JSON/YAML, so the distinction remains visible when stderr is captured separately. Create and full-zone rows have no snapshot source field.
  • Default delete output warns on stderr that concurrent changes can make the snapshot differ from the values actually removed; --show-zone, already-absent records, and failures do not print this warning.
  • An explicit fully qualified --name ending in . permits deletion when the pre-delete read fails, using a fresh timeout for DELETE. Relative names and @ still require a successful zone lookup. Name/type deletion stops on 401/403 read errors.
  • --show-zone prints the resulting full zone, while dns show retains its existing behavior.
  • CAA matching handles equivalent flags, tag case, and quoted values, and MX output retains priority 0.

Validation

  • go test ./internal/commands -run 'TestDNSRecordDelete' -count=1
  • make lint vet build test-race fmt-check

The snapshot is best-effort reporting only. The current DELETE client returns no removed-record details, so the CLI cannot make the default output authoritative when the record set changes between its read and the deletion request.

Staging validation remains open in zsoftly/iaas#762; merging this PR does not complete QA.

📝 Walkthrough

DNS record creation and deletion now print affected record values by default. Both commands support --show-zone to print the resulting zone. Record output includes MX priority, including zero.

Changes: DNS Record Output

Layer / File(s) Summary
Record matching and formatting
internal/commands/dns.go, internal/commands/dns_record_output_test.go, CHANGELOG.md, docs/commands.md
Shared helpers normalize DNS values, select matching records, and render record rows with name, type, content, TTL, and priority. Tests cover TXT and MX output, including MX priority zero.
Record creation output
internal/commands/dns.go, internal/commands/commands_test.go, internal/commands/dns_record_output_test.go
Creation supports --show-zone. Otherwise, it prints the matching created value and fetches the zone if needed to locate that value. Tests cover the fallback and create response.
Record deletion output
internal/commands/dns.go, internal/commands/dns_record_output_test.go
Name/type and numeric-ID deletion capture records before deletion. They print the removed records by default or the resulting zone with --show-zone. Tests cover missing records, API failure, and legacy IDs.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 55569

DNS record create and delete can report failure even though the change was applied. This mostly affects unusual record types and the legacy ID delete path, and scripts may retry a write that already succeeded. Fix these before merge if possible; the impact is limited.

record-create flow so verification mismatch after a successful create prints a
warning to stderr and returns success instead of an error; keep API failure
errors unchanged and use `printDNSRecordRows` for the command’s normal output
handling.
- Around line 506-516: Update the legacy ID deletion flow around `svc.Show` so
its pre-read is best effort: a lookup error or missing record must not prevent
`DeleteRecord`, and ordinary output should print an empty table when no matching
record is available. Preserve the separate `--show-zone` verification behavior.

PR #85: zcp-cli

  • Fix CAA record matching so a successful record-create prints the created record even when the API returns quoted CAA values.
  • Ensure successful record-delete reports the removed values when its pre-delete lookup is stale, unavailable, or missing the target record.

Most of the ticket behavior is correct, but one acceptance blocker remains. CAA values are compared as raw strings, so a create request using 0 issue letsencrypt.org does not match an API response using the equivalent 0 issue "letsencrypt.org". The command exits successfully but returns an empty table or [] for JSON/YAML. Please normalize CAA flags, case-insensitive tags, and quoted/unquoted values, with output-format tests.

The CAA matching issue is resolved and its table/JSON/YAML regression coverage is good. One acceptance blocker remains: record-delete prints a pre-delete snapshot, not necessarily what the DELETE removed. The new concurrent-change test confirms DELETE removes 192.0.2.2 while output reports 192.0.2.1. To satisfy the ticket, the API must return the removed RRset atomically; otherwise, the acceptance criterion and documentation need owner revision to promise only a pre-delete snapshot.

Clinton, your concern is valid, so I’ve explicitly labeled pre-delete snapshots in table, JSON and YAML output and aligned the ticket, documentation and QA expectations without claiming exact deleted values

Re-reviewed at the latest head. The revised ticket requirement for a clearly labeled pre-delete snapshot is implemented across table, JSON, and YAML output with an explicit concurrency warning. CAA normalization and all original create/show-zone behavior remain correct, and the full test and CI suite passes. No remaining findings. Approved.

Re-reviewed the current head. It is unchanged from the previously approved commit. The record-only create output, --show-zone, labeled pre-delete snapshot behavior, CAA normalization, focused tests, build/vet/formatting gates, and cross-platform CI remain clean. No findings. Approved.
